We interrupt ongoing GTA coverage...

...for this Ikaruga review.

I had never played the game before, but I came away impressed, if not enthralled. Very few games fit neatly into just one of the categories I named in the New Taxonomy of Gamers series, but Ikaruga is the quintessential perfectionist game. It requires you to do the same thing over and over again as you improve only incrementally. If you find yourself able to beat it on hard mode without dying, you can upload your video to YouTube and even get mentioned in reviews! To me, the reward's not worth the effort. But I understand the temptation to master something like this. It puts you in elite company.

Still a cool game, though. I'm glad I finally played it after all this time.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time in the last few weeks I've seen someone writing about Ikaruga. And as a result, it's a game I now want to play sometime. Plus, it's a chance for me to temporarily get away from the types of games I usually play: RPGs, strategy games, and platformer/action games. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It gives me hope that I might also enjoy a game from a genre I rarely experience.

Ikaruga is a great game, I had it for the Gamecube, I should track that copy down again.

This has nothing to do with your post, but I just saw you on Blogger's notable page, and I wanted to say:

How appropriate! You fight like a cow!

;o)

I'm gonna have to get my Dreamcast out again and have a go again.
That, and i'll have to get a 360 now, HD Ikaruga, oh boy.

I'll have to have a dreamcast shooter fest!

I played it a while back: a friend had the Japanese version on the Dreamcast, and let me play it after telling me that all Dreamcasts were sold with the inherent ability to play Japanese and copy games. After getting over selling my system like an idiot, I played and enjoy Ikaruga very much. As soon as I seen it advertised on the Dashboard, I downloaded it immediately.
