Cheat codes versus public education

Video game codes I remember without even trying:
  • 30 lives in Contra: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A
  • Face Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch Out: 007-373-5963
  • Warp to Dr. Wiley's castle in Mega Man 2: A1 B2 B4 C1 C5 D1 D3 E3 E5
  • Play Metroid without Samus's suit: JUSTIN BAILEY
  • Jump to the second quest in The Legend of Zelda: ZELDA
  • Activate blood in Mortal Kombat (Sega Genesis): A B A C A B B
  • Invincibility in Doom: IDDQD
  • Acquire all weapons and keys in Doom: IDKFA
Things I remember from high school chemistry class:

The Konami code (Contra) actually ends "B-A" - it's used in a lot of their old-school games.

Probably time to kill myself.

...or stealthily edit this post.

Once, while browsing personal ads online, I came across a pretty good-looking girl whose tagline was 007-373-5963. I think I came on too strong, though, because she never wrote back.

The "Donkey Punch" line might do you some favors in the eyes of some Craig's List posters...

And of course the Konami codes are immortalized in the Moldy Peaches song "Anyone Else But You" (which was of course immortalized by Juno).

I .. uh .. never used cheat codes.

Don't know why but it never really occurred to me to cheat in games, or not frequently enough to remember the codes.

I DO however have a large assortment of progress codes from a variety of games I've played over the years, including; Road Rash, Skitchin', Desert Striker, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Phantom 2142 and a few others that don't come to mind.

@ Scott - also see The Ataris song "Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start"

I thought about including some of those, too, like how I inexplicably remember the progress code "PAKKA" from Rebel Assault. But it didn't quite fit, and also who cares about Rebel Assault.

And this also brings to mind the "Mortal Kombat fatalities" corollary.
